Ingredients

  • 0.50 KG flank steak thinly sliced against the grain into 5cm pieces
  • 1 head broccoli washed & cut into florets
  • 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
  • For beef marinade:
  • 1 Tbsp. soy sauce low sodium
  • 1 Tbsp. water
  • 1 Tbsp. cornstarch
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 garlic clove minced
  • For the sauce:
  • 1/2 cup beef broth or 1/4 cup broth + 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 Tbsp. oyster sauce
  • 1 Tbsp. cornstarch
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp. soy sauce low sodium
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. brown sugar or 1 Tbsp. honey
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger grated
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes or siracha for a stronger spiciness
  • 2 garlic cloves minced

Method

  • In a medium bowl, stir the marinade ingredients together and add the beef slices. Stir until coated then cover and let stand in the fridge for 10 minutes (until you finish mixing the sauce).
  • In a small bowl, mix together the sauce ingredients. In a small pot, cook the broccoli in a boiling water for 2-3 minutes (not for too long so it'll keep its crispiness). Drain the broccoli from water and set aside.
  • Heat a medium wok or large skillet, over medium heat then add vegetable oil. Add the steak slices immediately and cook them until they start to brown on each side (discard the beef marinade).
  • Add the sauce to the beef and keep stirring until the sauce boils and thickens. Stir in the broccoli and cook for 1-2 minutes. Serve over white rice, Chow Mein or nothing at all for a light meal!

NOTE

  • Put the steak 15-20 minutes in the freezer before slicing, it will be firmer and easier to cut.
