The sight of an emptied up and closed family business on the street near where I live is depressing. Considering the difficult year it’s been, it’s a sight many communities have now become accustomed to. Such local businesses are the ones who are invested in employing and empowering youth and giving back to their community, which is why we should empower them in return whenever we get the chance.

Small, local businesses give our communities their identity. They make our cities and towns unique. There are chains that are available in pretty much every capital city in the world, but there isn’t going to be anything like that falafel vendor on your street or that cosy café in your neighbourhood with their own secret coffee blend.

These very local businesses know how to appeal to a customer’s desires and taste as they are more in tune with the needs and culture of their community. They’re more concerned with great customer service and, in return, are likely to offer a more personalised service, seeing as most of their customers would be locals too.

Independent shops boost the local economy. When you spend money in a local business, the money stays in the community and is reinvested into other local businesses and the people who run them. Their income is recycled back into the direct area they’re in rather than going to a faceless corporation.

That’s especially true because they feel responsible for improving their neighbourhood by creating jobs for locals and participating in charitable initiatives

Believe it or not, supporting local businesses is also better for the environment! They often use home-grown produce and materials, which leaves a much smaller carbon footprint than that of larger companies and corporations.

Additionally, small businesses encourage creativity and innovation in our society. There’s nothing wrong with a little healthy competition, that way prices are fair and the products are higher in quality. This also strengthens community relationships by linking different local suppliers and businesses together for a joined mission.

A great way to support local businesses in Jordan is by joining the 360Moms Mamas Rewards program. By participating in the Rewards program you would have discounts and special offers on local products, you'd be acquainted with businesses from a wide range of categories, most of which are based in Amman.

Help preserve these high street businesses by giving them your services. Buy local produce and groceries. When eating or ordering out, go for a local restaurant instead of a fast-food chain. These businesses need our help now more than ever, so remember them when shopping today, tomorrow and the day after.
