You are away for work, and your baby is with another caretaker that has your breast milk but needs to give it to your child. A cup or a spoon can be used but when you choose to use a bottle for this purpose .

You should consider the following when using bottles for your baby :

  • It is best to start offering the bottle between 3-6 weeks of age.

where before it may affect breastfeeding and the baby may develop nipple confusion.

  • The best bottle that can be used to give your baby the expressed breast milk is the one the baby prefers regardless of its kind.

  • Choose one type of nursing bottles and give it a try and change if the child refuses to accept it after several attempts.

  • Only use nipples that are made especially for newborns.

This will prevent nipple confusion and it will also prevent the unwanted increase of milk intake.

  • Choose the smaller sized nipples

What if the baby refuses to take the bottle?

  • Note that some babies accept the bottle from the first time while others do not accept it easily.

  • Some babies may refuse to take the bottle from the mother, but may accept it from someone else.

You may need to stay out of the room or outside the home before your baby accepts the bottle. You may need to leave the house for several hours and for several days, but in the end most of babies do accept it.

  • You may need to change the milk temperature to reach the degree that is accepted or change several industrial nipples to find the appropriate one for your baby

  • You can use a cup: from the first day your baby is born a cup can be used.

The cup is placed on the lower lip of your baby and the milk in the cup is raised to the level of the lower lip. Slowly pour it into the baby's mouth and he shall swallow it. A spoon or syringe can be used too.
