Swedish Meatballs from Sahar

Ingredients

For The Meatballs:

  • 500g ground beef 5 slices of simple toast bread (to be soaked in milk for 10 minutes then well squeezed)
  • 1 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp grounded black pepper
  • 1 garlic, grated
  • ½ onion, grated
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese (optional)
  • 1 egg, beaten.

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 garlic, grated
  • 2 cups beef stock
  • 2 tbsp plain flour
  • 1 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 1 tbsp bbq sauce
  • 1 tsp whole mustard grains
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper  

Method

Preheat oven to 200°C. Mix all the meatballs ingredients in a big bowl and then shape the meatballs. Arrange on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Bake for 20-30 minutes depending on their size. Prepare the gravy: Sautée onion and garlic in butter, add mustard grains, add flour, then stock. Add the rest of the ingredients, one by one, and simmer on low heat stirring often until it is slightly thicker. Drop in meatballs and be careful not to mush them. Serve with mashed potatoes or white fluffy rice.
