4 Tips and tricks to help your child sleep through the night
Sleep makes children happy and healthy, it’s also very important for their brain development, so getting enough sleep is a basic need not only to them but to parents as well! Sometimes it can get a bit tricky to get babies to sleep for long hours. But do not worry! we have found some great tips that will help your child stay asleep through the night.
- Make bedtime a routine.
Creating a bedtime routine for your child can take the stress out of bedtime for both the parents and the child. Kids thrive on structure, as it gives them a sense of safety and stability.
Actual bedtime routines can consist of many relaxing activities. Here is an example of a bedtime routine:
- A relaxing bath
Soaking your kid in a warm bath, filled with bubbles and nice smells will drive him to relax and unwind. So, make sure to use the right products that can give the right feel and won’t hurt your baby with their chemical ingredients at the same time.
Therefore, we always recommend using organic and natural products for children like Amina’s natural soap (a recipe made for her children… read her story here).
- A soothing Massage
After the relaxing bath, spend some quality time with your child by massaging him, use safe oils (we recommend this chamomile shower oil) to rub his back, arms and legs. Some aromas will soothe him and help his muscles to relax.
- Storytime in bed
Read a story to your child or simply come up with one, make it a regular thing. You’ll watch your child closing his eyes while listening to your voice and trying to imagine what the character is doing or saying.
- No screens before bedtime
Have you heard about melatonin before? Melatonin has become one of the most used medicines given to kids or adults to help them sleep! Doesn’t sound safe, right?
Well, you should know that our bodies produce this hormone naturally, but watching screens before bedtime stimulates the brain and inhibits the production of melatonin and serotonin, the hormones that help us sleep. This can make kids feel energized just when they should be resting! kids should turn off screens at least one to two hours before bed.
This also applies to infants and toddlers, they might not be using tablets or mobile phones, but they are exposed to televisions and their parents’ mobile screens, so turning everything off before bedtime is always recommended.
- Create an ideal sleeping environment.
It is best to keep your child’s room dark, quiet, and cool. Some children, especially toddlers might want a little light in their room, so a nightlight or a dim light is perfectly acceptable. If they cannot sleep in silence or you want to draw out some of the noises from the rest of the house, use a white noise machine.
In addition, some essential oils can help to relax a fussy baby or child and encourage sleep. Like lavender oil and chamomile oil, you can spill some drops on your child’s pillow or add a few drops to a humidifier.
But first, you should double-check with your doctor to make sure when to use them and how; as each age group has its own application instructions.
Secondly, choose the purest oils you can find, look for organic brands that are actually accredited and stay away from any oils or products that have these 7 toxic ingredients.
- Don’t rely on soothing methods
Children’s Sleep Consultants always say, "If you put your baby in his crib when he is already asleep and he wakes up in the night, which all humans do, he won't recognize his surroundings and will need your help getting back to sleep.”
Try to put your baby down drowsy but awake. This will help him learn to self-soothe and fall asleep—and, more importantly, back to sleep—on his own.”
This one can be hard to avoid – if something works, why would you stop? But you have got to give your baby the chance to learn by himself. It is known that by the age of 5 months, most babies have the capability to fall asleep on their own, and if you are still doing it for him, you are getting in his way.
So, keep your cuddle time, but gradually stop the patting and shushing and rocking to sleep.
These tips can be altered depending on what works for your child's needs. It is not so much the content of these tips that is important, but the consistency which is key.
